In the world of conventional toothpaste today that is less promising and only promises heightened susceptibility to tooth decay and caries, you need to know that herbal and natural toothpastes which you can use without fear of any underlying disadvantages exist and can be made by you in the comfort of your home. Yeah, you can make your own toothpaste.

We’ve been totally brainwashed since childhood that if we have to stay away from tooth decay, then fluoride in toothpaste tubes is the surest way to do that but come to think of it; America does not have lesser cases of tooth decay despite they endeavor to drink fluoridated water. This should tell you that fluoride does little or nothing to ensure you have healthy teeth. In fact, having this ingredient in your toothpaste can go a long way to bring tooth decay closer to you. The cost of having to use fluoride to keep your teeth from wearing away isn’t worth it.

Fluoride has recently been linked to certain health issues like; brain damage, cancer, infertility, lethargy, arthritis and a whole lot of other health issues that come with a continuous buildup of fluoride or use of fluoride in the body. Triclosan is another ingredient found in conventional toothpastes that should be discarded as it brings the body more harm than good. Imagine having to use an ingredient previously registered as a pesticide to brush your teeth. That sounds unhealthy on different levels, right?  Now you know what having a tube of conventional toothpaste means and you’re asking yourself if it means you should go on living without brushing your teeth? No.

There are other ways to keep your radiant smile from wavering. You always can through the natural means. A lot of herbal and natural toothpaste which is fluoride, sweeteners and triclosan free exist. These are great for your teeth and once you start on the journey of using the natural means to keep your smile, you’d find out that before long, you wouldn’t even miss your conventional toothpastes. You can decide to go for readymade herbal toothpastes or you can decide to take the steps I’ll give later on to make yourself some natural toothpaste at home.

How to make toothpaste

Now let’s look at how you can make your own homemade herbal and natural toothpaste. Bearing in mind that your kids might not endure having to brush with a toothpaste without sweeteners, I found you a recipe that your kids won’t spit out this time.

To make your own natural toothpaste, you should have the following ingredients and in their right proportion;

• ½ cup of coconut oil

• 2 small packets of stevia powder

• 2-3 Tablespoons of baking soda

• 15-20 drops of peppermint or cinnamon essential oil

• An optional 10 drops of myrrh extract

Although xylitol has some dental health benefits too, stevia is the most natural ingredient to help with the bland taste alongside your minty flavor.

Now how do we prepare our natural toothpaste?

  1. Melt or soften your coconut oil slightly.
  2. Mix in the other ingredients and stir very well. If you are using semi-hard coconut oil, use a fork or spoon to help you break it apart and stir even better. If it happens that you are using coconut oil which is completely melted, you will need to stir several times while the mixture cools to keep your baking soda incorporated.
  3. Put your properly stirred mixture in a glass jar.
  4. Allow it to cool completely. And voila you have your homemade toothpaste.

To use your toothpaste

Dip your toothbrush in the glass jar, scrape a small amount onto your brush and brush your teeth. You could use a spoon to collect some of the paste onto your toothbrush. Use whichever way you feel is convenient for you.

Using homemade toothpastes works as much as your conventional toothpastes works but this has the natural feel to it and so keeps your teeth free from the burden of plaques. So go ahead make natural toothpastes or patronize stores  selling herbal and natural toothpaste if not for anything, do it for your kid’s dental health. They deserve the natural remedies to dental caries and plaques.
